Ground-Water and Surface-Water Interactions Studies Near Kenai River Salmon Redds

Kenai River at Soldotna ADOTP&F Park

The following data is from an index station for measuring ground-water and surface-water interaction processes. Salmon lay their eggs in stream beds. The impacts of ground-water conditions may be more important during this period and until emergence of salmon fry. Some of the questions related to fish habitat require a better understanding of potential temperature and water chemistry conditions at this ground-water and surface-water interface. Please look over the below data and let us know if you have any questions.

Notes:

General:

Specific:
  1. For plots related to air temperature, soil surface temperature, and river surface water temperature the following notes apply:
    • Measurements are taken with two redundant thermistors labeled "th1" and "th2"
    • The thermistor string that carries these thermistors is labeled T##a, where ## are two digits and a is a letter.
    • The plot named "plot 1" presents an average of the two redundant readings from th1 and th2. It also shows the difference between th1 and th2. If the difference is close to zero, then the variability in the two thermistor readings is due to random processes. If the difference is not close to zero, then the variability is likely not due to random processes.
    • When one of the redundant thermistors is damaged, the "average" value in "plot 1" is substituted with the individual reading from the remaining thermistor.
  2. Air temperature data is from unshielded thermistors.
